About Tyson
Tyson Spears Sr. is a proud Milwaukee native committed to strengthening communities
through mental health advocacy, leadership, and compassionate service. A graduate of
Milwaukee Washington High School—with a focus in computer technology and multiple
track scholarship offers—Tyson went on to earn his Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from
Lincoln University of Missouri, an HBCU, in 1994.
Professional Background
Early Career in Youth Services
Tyson began his career with the State of Missouri Division of Youth Services at the Special
Treatment Unit (STU), the state’s first long‑term residential treatment program for
adjudicated youth. The program became nationally recognized for its innovative Assertive
Community‑Based Treatment model and comprehensive aftercare services. During his
eight years with the agency, Tyson played a key role in advancing community‑centered
rehabilitation approaches for youth.
Justice Reform & Counseling Practice
In 2002, Tyson returned to Milwaukee to join Justice 2000 Pretrial Services, a
court‑ordered program supporting adults navigating the legal system while addressing
mental health and substance use needs. While serving the organization, Tyson earned his
Master’s Degree in Counseling from Southern New Hampshire University (2007) and
completed his professional counseling licensure. He spent seven years helping expand
access to essential community‑based services and supporting meaningful justice reform.
Leadership at Milwaukee Mental Health Associates
In 2009, Tyson joined Milwaukee Mental Health Associates, Inc., where he now serves as
Chief Operations Officer. In this leadership role, he oversees organizational operations,
program development, and community partnerships that improve access to high‑quality,
community‑based mental health services across Milwaukee.
A Commitment Rooted in Faith & Community
Tyson’s passion for mental health advocacy is deeply rooted in his faith and in his
dedication to the community that shaped him. He believes in bringing care directly to where
people live, reducing barriers, and ensuring that support is delivered with compassion.
“My passion to be an advocate for mental health stems from putting God first, the love I
have for the underserved community I was raised in, and understanding that everyone can
benefit from positive support. The community‑based model fosters hope and guidance in
building a healthy community. Services should be available where you live—provided by
staff who have the compassion to serve.”
